Cross-border product labels: vector indexes for product questions

Review vector indexes for product questions in Cross-border product labels. Check sources, input boundaries, error handling and repeatable test evidence.

What the documents look like

Cross-border product compliance and labeling work happens before listing and before import, so the evidence base is product safety and label documentation rather than transaction risk data. The material comes from platform policy centers, testing laboratory reports, destination-country regulation libraries, and supplier files. Day-to-day documents include product test reports, English labels, MSDS sheets, and platform prohibited-item lists. The three most time-consuming steps are judging destination-country requirements, arranging additional testing, and revising packaging labels. Every new product launch brings a new batch of documents, and updates are irregular rather than scheduled.

For the vector model and index step, document shape determines what an index can hold. A product test report carries a laboratory name, sample name, test item, standard number, and conclusion. An English label carries an ingredient list, warning statements, net content, and country of origin. An MSDS carries chemical identification, hazard statements, and first-aid measures. A platform prohibited-item list carries product categories and prohibition reasons. Among these fields, numbers, models, and proper nouns suit full-text retrieval, while natural-language compliance requirements suit semantic retrieval.

Constraints at the vector indexes step

Knowledge bases associated for one retrieval must use the same vector model, so the first check is the actual model and its input types. One source data block can be linked to multiple indexes, and the index content and the original text are checked separately. Indexes are built from complete and focused information, and retrieval coverage against index length is weighed against sample results. Image retrieval also depends on whether image descriptions or image vectors were generated at ingestion time, and looking only at the query side is not sufficient. After a model or index change, the same question set is compared against cited original text, and vector scores alone do not support a promise about outcomes.

Hypothetical drill sample for checking: the source text to be compared consists of three sentences. "A testing laboratory report numbered T-2024-0317 states that the sample is a portable power bank, the test item is UN38.3 transport safety, and the conclusion is pass." "The report issue date is March 17, 2024, and the report does not state a conclusion on European Union market access." "The English label draft provided by the supplier contains a CE mark and a battery capacity statement, and no destination-country regulatory compliance declaration is attached." One draft sentence to be judged is: "This product has passed UN38.3 testing, meets European Union market access requirements, and can be listed for sale." The draft sentence extends a transport safety test conclusion into a market access conclusion. The source text does not state an EU access conclusion, so that part is unsupported.

Configuration and implementation checks

Configuration itemHypothetical starting point for this drillReason and comparison method
Vector modelA general vector model supporting Chinese and EnglishCompare against the model identifier actually used by the knowledge base, and confirm associated libraries match
Index contentBuild one index per test item for each test reportCompare against a single index for the whole report, and observe recall differences on number-type questions
Search modeUse hybrid retrieval for number-type questionsCompare against pure semantic retrieval, and observe hits on standard numbers and report numbers
Minimum relevanceHypothetical starting point 0.4Compare against 0.3 and 0.5, and observe whether unrelated fragments enter the citations
Citation limitHypothetical starting point 2000 tokensCompare against 1000 and 3000, and observe whether citations cover the fields needed for a judgment
Question optimizationEnabled for multi-turn follow-up scenariosCompare against the disabled state, and observe retrieval changes after coreference resolution

These values are hypothetical starting points for this drill, used for comparison against adjacent values, and are not official defaults. RRF is the fusion process for hybrid retrieval results and is not a separate toggle. Image retrieval requires an image input on the query side and corresponding model capability, and reranking requires a model and is enabled according to settings.

Three common errors

  1. Treating a transport safety test conclusion as a market access conclusion. In the hypothetical sample, report T-2024-0317 has UN38.3 as its test item and pass as its conclusion, and the source text does not state an EU access conclusion. Writing "meets European Union market access requirements" treats an unstated matter as a confirmed one.
  2. Counting multiple indexes on the same source data block as multiple independent documents. A source data block and its indexes have a one-to-many relation. When retrieval hits any one index, the results merge into the same source data block, and the vector score takes the highest value. Counting index entries as document entries double-counts the evidence.
  3. Treating a retrieval hit as an authorization to act. Retrieval returns cited content and does not constitute a listing permit, a customs clearance permit, or a platform review pass. In the hypothetical sample, "can be listed for sale" in the draft sentence requires platform review and destination-country access confirmation, and the retrieval step does not produce that authorization.

How to verify the setup

  1. Enter the three source sentences and the draft sentence from the hypothetical sample, and compare "meets European Union market access requirements" in the draft sentence against "the report does not state a conclusion on European Union market access" in the source text. The observable result is that this clause of the draft sentence is marked unsupported, and no statement of an EU access conclusion exists in the source text.
  2. Enter report number T-2024-0317 as the retrieval term, and compare the citations returned by hybrid retrieval against those returned by pure semantic retrieval. The observable result is that hybrid retrieval returns the source data block containing that number. The result of pure semantic retrieval is recorded after actual observation, with no preset that it must hit or must be empty.
  3. Enter a request to associate knowledge bases that use different vector models, and compare the model identifiers of each library. The observable result is that libraries with mismatched model identifiers are excluded, no cross-model retrieval comparison is performed, and the observed identifier differences are recorded.

An empty result handoff can be checked against the explicit paper input [] for downstream design, without claiming that a fictional rule retrieval necessarily returns []. Values collected by retrieval or by a form do not constitute authorization, and business verification, approval, database writes, and external synchronization each require their own downstream implementation. A pending review status does not demonstrate a lack of operating permission, and an unsigned termination does not constitute a completed termination.
