What the documents look like
Cross-border product compliance work happens before listing and before import. The central question is whether product safety and label evidence is complete. The materials handled day to day include product test reports, English-language labels, MSDS files and platform prohibited-item lists. These materials come from scattered sources and are updated irregularly. Each new listing can introduce a new version of a label or report.
Within contract and transaction material comparison, citation tracing answers a narrow question. After a test report or label text has been retrieved, can the reviewer state which document and which version it came from, and does the proposed drafting sentence actually find support in that source text? The compliance specialist, product manager or cross-border seller needs this traceability before any platform submission or customs declaration moves forward. A citation that cannot be traced back to a specific document and version does not carry the same evidential weight as one that can.
The knowledge base search node returns citation content as an array, and the length may be zero. This means the retrieval path completes even when nothing is matched. The downstream answer step therefore has to handle an empty citation array on its own. The search scope depends on the selected knowledge bases. Multiple knowledge bases can only be associated together when they use the same vector model. Citation source checking requires comparing the answer against the cited source text item by item. Fluency of the answer does not substitute for source evidence.
Hypothetical exercise sample. A cross-border seller's compliance specialist holds an English label text supplied by a vendor, containing two sentences: "Product Name: Stainless Steel Travel Mug. Capacity: 500ml. Batch No. TL-2024-0312." There is also a testing laboratory report, report number TR-2024-0087, issued 15 March 2024, stating that the batch passed migration testing. A proposed drafting sentence is to be assessed: "This product has passed migration testing, report number TR-2024-0087, batch TL-2024-0312." There is also a handover request: "Please confirm whether this batch's label text and test report can serve as listing compliance evidence, and authorize submission to the platform for review." The source materials contain product name, capacity and batch number. The report contains number, date and test conclusion. The subject, batch and report number in the proposed sentence all have corresponding fields in the source text. The phrase "authorize submission to the platform for review" in the handover request is a business action. Retrieval results and material comparison do not themselves constitute authorization.
Constraints at the citation tracing step
The knowledge base search node outputs citations as an array whose length may be zero, so an empty result does not mean the workflow has errored or terminated. The downstream answer step must have its own design for receiving an empty array. Selected knowledge bases must share the same vector model; knowledge bases with different vector models cannot be associated together. The citation cap controls the maximum tokens cited per search. The minimum relevance value is a 0-1 number that takes effect only under semantic retrieval or result reranking. It is a filter threshold, not a final ordering rule. Reranking requires a rerank model and must be enabled according to settings. Image retrieval requires image input and matching model capability. RRF is a fusion process for combining multiple retrieval channels, not a toggle.
Citation tracing is a manual comparison step. It is not an authorization step, not an approval step, and not a database write. Whether a citation is adopted still depends on an effective-version review. The retrieval library's same-vector-model requirement does not extend to business registration sites or other external systems. A relevance score is not a category, entity or permission filter. It does not exclude unrelated businesses or unauthorized records.
Configuration and implementation checks
| Check item | Relevant setting or action on this page | Observation and record |
|---|---|---|
| Associated knowledge bases | Select knowledge bases using the same vector model for vector search | Record selected knowledge base identifiers; knowledge bases with different vector models are not associated together |
| Citation cap | Maximum tokens cited per search | Record the hypothetical starting value chosen for this exercise and the reason; compare with actual tokens in retrieval results |
| Minimum relevance | 0-1 value, effective only under semantic retrieval or result reranking | Record the value set; observe citation count and source coverage after filtering |
| Citation content output | Array format, length may be zero | When the array is empty, record the downstream handling design; do not infer that the workflow has errored or terminated |
| Citation input handover | Retrieval output passed to the answer step | Compare answer against cited source text item by item for subject, batch and report number |
| Material version currency | Test sources with current and historical document versions | Record the version actually used; adoption of a citation still requires effective-version review |
Three common errors
- Treating a retrieval hit as an authorization. The input is the handover request phrase "authorize submission to the platform for review." The comparison object is the retrieval output and the source material text. The observable result is that the retrieval result contains only citation content and no authorization status field. Treating a hit as already authorized confuses retrieval with business authorization.
- Treating different field values from the same batch as a contradiction. The input is batch number TL-2024-0312 in the label text and batch number TL-2024-0312 in the report. The comparison object is the value of the same field. The observable result is that the two values agree. Judging a contradiction merely because the two materials come from different sources fails to compare by same subject, same period and same field.
- Treating a pending-review status as missing operation permission. The input is the handover request phrase "please confirm ... and authorize submission." The comparison object is the status description in the request and the source material text. The observable result is that the request itself states no review conclusion and no authorization result. Inferring from pending review that permission is absent supplies a definite answer from information that was not stated.
How to verify the setup
- Input the hypothetical sample's proposed sentence "This product has passed migration testing, report number TR-2024-0087, batch TL-2024-0312." The comparison object is the report number, issue date and batch number in the testing laboratory report source text. The observable result is that the report number and batch number in the proposed sentence both have corresponding fields in the source text, and the test conclusion matches the source. The condition is met when each field is traceable. If any field is absent from the source text, record it as unsupported.
- Input the hypothetical sample's handover request "Please confirm whether this batch's label text and test report can serve as listing compliance evidence, and authorize submission to the platform for review." The comparison object is the retrieval output and the source material text. The observable result is that the retrieval output contains no authorization status or review conclusion. The condition is met when the record clearly states that authorization is a business action requiring separate system implementation. If a retrieval hit is treated as authorization already executed, the condition is not met.
- Input a clearly defined paper empty citation array []. The comparison object is the downstream answer step's handling design. The observable result is that the downstream design has a clear handling path for an empty array. The condition is met when the empty-result handling method is recorded. This paper input does not mean that a fictional rule search necessarily returns an empty array; it is used only to check the downstream design.
