Parcel labels and handoffs: tool calls for operating reviews

Review tool calls for operating reviews in Parcel labels and handoffs. Check document scope, failure paths and source evidence through controlled tests.

What the documents look like

Parcel label and handoff work sits at the point where a parcel leaves the warehouse. The operational focus is the carrier scan that assigns responsibility. For operating reports and exception reviews, the working materials are electronic waybills, handoff manifests, pickup scan records, and exception item registers. These materials update per batch and per day. At shift handover, staff need to separate records the carrier has already confirmed by scan from records that remain pending verification.

Tool calls and plugins enter this step as a control question rather than a data question. The tool description tells the model what the tool is for, and the model decides from context whether to call it. A retrieval result is not a responsibility determination, and a tool call is not an authorization to execute a business action. The page below covers the implementation conditions, document differences, and reconciliation steps for this category and task only.

Constraints at the tool calls step

A tool can be a system module, such as an AI conversation, knowledge base search, or HTTP module, or it can be a plugin. For system modules, tool parameters are already fixed and need no extra configuration. For plugins, tool parameters are configurable. The tool description tells the model what the tool does, and the model uses context semantics to decide whether a call is needed. Parameters carry two key values: the parameter description and whether the parameter is required.

Where a tool has no parameters, the model decides from the description alone. Where a tool has parameters but none are required, the model can still call the tool even when the context holds no suitable parameter, and it may fabricate a parameter. Where a tool has required parameters and no suitable value exists in context, the model may not call the tool; prompt wording can guide the user to supply the missing value. In advanced orchestration, dragging the tool call connection point exposes a diamond on available tool headers, which connects to the diamond at the bottom of the tool call module. Connected tools separate tool input from ordinary input, and the description can be edited to make the call timing more precise. The documentation advises adding tools in small numbers and tuning before expanding. The tool call termination node ends the current call and does not call the AI to summarize tool results.

Hypothetical paper exercise: a warehouse shipping group at shift handover on 10 June 2025 holds a handoff manifest reading "waybills SF0001 to SF0020 for this batch, 20 pieces total; pickup scan records show 18 pieces scanned, 2 pieces pending verification." The exception item register reads "SF0019 outer packaging damaged, photographed, pending carrier confirmation of responsibility." A draft sentence reads "all 20 pieces in this batch have completed pickup handoff." The reconciliation materials are the handoff manifest and the exception register above. No real customer and no real waybill number is involved.

Configuration and implementation checks

Configuration itemHypothetical starting point for this exerciseComparison and reconciliation method
Tool descriptionStates the conditions for reading the handoff manifest and the exception registerCompare field by field against the fields the draft sentence requires
Tool parametersWaybill number range, scan status, exception item flagCheck whether the actual request carries these parameters
Required parameterWaybill number range set as requiredObserve whether the model declines to call when the value is missing
Tool connectionOnly two tools connected: read handoff manifest, read exception registerDo not add further tools during tuning
Tool call terminationPlaced after the exception register readConfirm no AI summary call follows termination
Custom tool variableDescription added for a node not treated as a tool parameterCheck whether the call lands on the corresponding node

Reason for the starting point: this exercise involves only two material types, so a small tool count makes call timing easier to observe. The comparison object is the field set the draft sentence requires against what the tool actually returns.

Three common errors

  1. Treating a parameter description as an execution guarantee. A parameter description states what a field means; it does not mean the tool will be called or will return a complete record. For the check, input the draft sentence and the handoff manifest text, compare whether the actual tool request carries the waybill number range, and if the request lacks that parameter then the call did not occur as expected.
  2. Treating a retrieval result as a responsibility determination. The pickup scan record shows 18 pieces scanned and 2 pending verification; retrieving that record does not mean the 2 pieces have completed handoff. For the check, input the exception register text, compare the draft sentence "all 20 pieces have completed pickup handoff" against the register entry "pending carrier confirmation of responsibility," and if the two states disagree then the draft sentence is unsupported.
  3. Treating tool call termination as automatic summarization. The termination node ends the current call and does not call the AI to summarize, which does not mean the model has produced a review conclusion. For the check, input the workflow after the termination node, compare whether AI output still appears after termination, and if output appears then termination did not take effect.

How to verify the setup

  1. Input the handoff manifest text and the draft sentence. Compare the draft sentence "all 20 pieces in this batch have completed pickup handoff" against the manifest wording "18 pieces scanned, 2 pieces pending verification." If the draft sentence does not distinguish scanned from pending verification, record it as unsupported and log the evidence gap.
  2. Input the exception register text. Compare "SF0019 outer packaging damaged, pending carrier confirmation of responsibility" against the draft sentence. If the draft sentence omits this exception item, record it as an omission and preserve the pending verification status.
  3. Input an empty result [] to check the downstream design. Observe whether AI summary output still appears after the termination node; if output appears, the termination condition was not met. If output is empty, record the actual observation and do not claim that a fictional rule retrieval necessarily returns [].

All judgments above require the same entity, the same period, and the same field. Where a value is not stated, or where only related-stage evidence exists, record it as pending verification rather than as a denial or a conflict.
